Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is using a mode of communication other that spoken words. It could include pictures, text messages, or using specialty iPad programs.
Social skills are the abilities we use to have meaningful interactions with each other. They can be both verbal skills (such as taking a turn, or topic maintenance) or non-verbal skills (such as body language or body positioning). All social skills are approached through a neurodiversity affirming approach.
Literacy is founded on a strong understanding of the sounds we use for speech, and the ability to hear and change those sounds.
Wanting to improve how clearly you communicate? Do you speak too quickly, or too quietly? Lingering speech sound difficulties? Want to modify your accent so people understand you better? Lets chat!
My name is Dallin Ellingson. I'm a registered Speech Language Pathologist, and I live and work in Southern Alberta. I am passionate about working with children across their early developmental years, as well as through school from grades K-12. I've worked with children that have minor speech, language, and literacy needs to children that aren't communicating verbally and require the use of AAC technology. I also work with children that have medical diagnosis that can affect their ability to communicate clearly, including Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Apraxia, ADHD and others. I believe that every child will communicate if they have the tools to communicate. Everyone has the right to communicate their wants and needs and be confident with their voice.
